You have successfully completed your NYSC registration. Now, the question on your mind, is after NYSC registration, what is next?

This is the question I got from a lot of PCMs once they completed their registration.

Just because have filled the form, captured your biometrics, uploaded your documents, submitted your registration and paid the required fee for the call-up number. But that doesn’t mean you should forget about NYSC until you receive call-up letter.

There are still several things you need to do.

After NYSC registration, you will need to monitor your dashboard for your NYSC call-up number, check for your Green Card, wait for your call-up letter, prepare your camp documents and start making arrangements for transportation and other camp expenses.

However, what happens after registration is not exactly the same for everybody.

A locally trained single PCM, a married female PCM and a foreign-trained PCM can go through slightly different stages before receiving their call-up number and call-up letter.

So, if you have just completed your NYSC registration and you are wondering what is the next stage after NYSC registration, here is what you should expect.

What Next After NYSC Registration?

Generally, the process after NYSC registration follows this order:

1. Your registration is processed.
2. Your NYSC call-up number is generated when you are cleared for mobilisation.
3. Your Green Card becomes available on your dashboard.
4. NYSC releases the call-up letters.
5. You check your deployment information and prepare for camp.
6. You print and organise the documents required for camp registration.
7. You travel to your assigned Orientation Camp on the date stated by NYSC.

This is why you should always follow the timetable for your own batch instead of relying on dates from an older batch.

1. Your NYSC Call-Up Number Will Be Generated

One of the first things you will be waiting for after completing your registration is your NYSC call-up number.

Your call-up number is an important part of your NYSC mobilisation process. It is generated after your registration has been processed and you have been cleared for mobilisation.

You don’t have panic if you complete your registration and don’t immediately see a call-up number.

NYSC no longer generate call-up numbers immediately after completing registration like before.

The mobilisation process has several stages, including checking the information submitted by PCMs.

For locally trained graduates, NYSC works with the lists submitted by Corps Producing Institutions. For foreign-trained graduates, NYSC evaluates the uploaded credentials before eligible candidates are given call-up numbers.

So, if you have successfully completed registration, the next thing is to keep checking your NYSC dashboard.

Note: Not everyone who registered for the same batch are given call-up numbers at the same time, some are shifted to the next stream or batch.

How Do I Know When My Call-Up Number Is Ready?

Log in to your NYSC dashboard and check your registration details.

If your call-up number has been generated, it should appear on your dashboard. Don’t lose your NYSC login details.

You will need them again to access your dashboard and print relevant documents.

2. Your NYSC Green Card Will Be Available

After completing your registration, another important document you should watch out for is your NYSC Green Card.

The Green Card is the registration slip containing important information from your NYSC registration.

It is different from your call-up letter.

This distinction is important because a lot of PCMs confuse the two.

Your Green Card is basically a record of the information you submitted during registration, while the call-up letter is the document that tells you where you have been deployed and when you are expected to report for the orientation course.

Once your registration has been processed, check your dashboard for the Green Card and print it when it becomes available.

Don’t wait until the night before travelling to camp before trying to print your documents.

If you have access to a printer, print your documents early and keep them safely.

You can also keep softcopies on your phone or email, but don’t rely only on your phone. Your phone can get lost, damaged or run out of battery. A physical copy is safer.

3. What Happens to Married Female PCMs After Registration?

If you are a married female PCM, your process can look different from that of other PCMs.

During your NYSC registration, married female PCMs are allowed to indicate their marital status and upload the required documents for concessional posting, meaning that they will be posted to their husband’s state of domicile.

Married female PCMs are expected upload their marriage certificate, evidence of change of name and evidence of their husband’s place of domicile during registration.

Your marital information and supporting documents may need to be processed before your posting information is finalised.

The important thing is that you provided the correct information and uploaded genuine supporting documents.

4. Foreign-Trained PCMs Have an Additional Step

If you graduated from a university outside Nigeria, your process can take longer because NYSC has to evaluate and verify your credentials.

Foreign-trained graduates upload their academic and travel documents during registration.

NYSC then evaluates the documents. Only candidates whose uploaded documents are found satisfactory are passed for issuance of call-up numbers.

Foreign-trained graduates also undergo physical verification of their credentials.

PCMs will choose the exact venue and date for their physical verification on their NYSC dashboard.

Physical verification of the credentials uploaded by foreign-trained graduates takes place at the specific venues, dates and duration indicated on the candidate’s dashboard.

So, if you are a foreign-trained PCM and you have completed registration but have not received your call-up number yet. Your documents may still be going through the evaluation process. Keep checking your dashboard for updates.

5. Await Your NYSC Call-Up Letter

After your call-up number and other mobilisation processes have been completed, the next major thing to wait for is your NYSC call-up letter.

This is the document that tells you where you have been deployed for the NYSC orientation course.

Your call-up letter normally contains important information such as your:

• Name
• Call-up number
• State of deployment
• Orientation camp
• Reporting date
• Reporting instructions
• Other information relating to your mobilisation

This is why you should not book your trip or make final travel arrangements based on rumours from WhatsApp groups. Wait for your actual call-up letter..

Do Not Confuse Your Green Card With Your Call-Up Letter

Your Green Card does not tell you the same thing as your call-up letter.

The Green Card is your registration record while call-up letter contains your deployment and reporting information.

So, if you have your Green Card but your call-up letter has not been released, you are not necessarily missing anything.

You are simply waiting for the next stage of the mobilisation process.

6. Check Your Call-Up Letter Properly

Once your call-up letter is released, don’t just look at the state and close the document. Read everything carefully.

Check your:

Name: Make sure your name is correct.

Call-up number: Confirm that it matches the information on your dashboard.

State of deployment: This tells you the state where you are expected to attend orientation.

Orientation camp: Check the camp location and address.

Reporting date: Know the exact date you are expected to report.

Other instructions: Read the instructions carefully because they may contain important information about reporting and documentation.

7. Print and Photocopy Your Important Documents

Once your call-up letter is available, start preparing your camp documents. Don’t wait until you are already at the motor park.

You should have multiple photocopies of the important documents you will need during camp registration.

The exact documents can vary depending on your category and circumstances.

For a typical locally trained PCM, documents may include things such as:

• Medical fitness certificate

Because you may need copies during camp registration and you don’t want to start looking for a business centre immediately after arriving at camp.

Make several copies before traveling. Keep the originals in one safe folder and the photocopies in another.

8. Get Your Medical Fitness Certificate

If you haven’t already obtained your medical fitness certificate, this is the time to sort it out.

Don’t leave it until the last day. NYSC camp involves physical activities, early morning drills, long periods of standing and other activities that make your health important.

If you have an existing medical condition, don’t hide it simply because you are afraid it could affect your service.

It is better to have the appropriate medical documentation than to arrive at camp without the information you may need.

The NYSC orientation camp is highly not ideal for pregnant and nursing mothers, and prospective Corps Members in this category will not be allowed to stay in the camp after completing their registration in the camp.

9. Start Buying Your NYSC Camp Essentials

You don’t need to wait for the last two days before camp before buying everything.

Once your call-up letter is out and you know your state of deployment, start preparing.

You will need basic personal items for the orientation camp.

Some of the things you may want to prepare include:

• White T-shirts
• White shorts
• White socks
• Sports shoes
• Bathroom slippers
• Toiletries
• Mosquito repellent
• Towel
• Bed sheets
• Small padlock
• Torchlight
• Waist pouch
• Power bank
• Water bottle
• Basic medications
• Personal hygiene items

You don’t have to buy everything at once. Start with the things you already know you will need.

Also, don’t spend all your money buying unnecessary camp items. A lot of things are sold around NYSC camps, but prices can be higher because everyone needs them at the same time.

If you can get your basic items before travelling, it can save you money and stress.

10. Start Preparing Money for Transportation and Camp Expenses

One thing you should not overlook is transportation.

Your call-up letter may send you to a state that is far from where you currently live.

That means you may need money for:

• Transportation to the state of deployment
• Transportation from the motor park to the camp
• Food before getting into camp
• Small personal expenses
• Emergency expenses
• Return transportation after the orientation course

Your NYSC allowance will not solve everything immediately. Prepare the money before traveling. If you are traveling from Lagos to a state in the North or East, for example, your transportation cost can be significant.

11. Confirm the Exact Orientation Camp Location

Another mistake PCMs make is assuming that the state capital is the same thing as the orientation camp. It is not always the case.

Your call-up letter should contain the relevant camp information. Check the exact camp location before travelling.

If you are using public transportation, find out where you are likely to stop and how to get from the motor park to the camp.

You can also save the location on your phone before leaving. This is especially important if you have never travelled to the state before.

12. Join Your Batch Communication Groups — But Be Careful

By the time call-up letters are released, WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook groups for the batch will usually become very active.

These groups can be useful.

PCMs share information about:

• Transportation
• Camp locations
• What to pack
• Camp experiences
• Accommodation before reporting
• Travel arrangements
• Other practical information

But don’t believe everything you read there.

Someone saying:

“NYSC has changed the reporting date.”

does not automatically make it true.

Someone saying:

“You must pay ₦20,000 before you can enter camp.”

doesn’t automatically make it true either.

WhatsApp groups are useful for sharing information.

13. Be Careful With Fake NYSC Agents

This is another reason why you should stay calm when you are waiting for your call-up number or call-up letter. Some people take advantage of PCMs who are desperate to get a particular state.

You may see messages such as:

• “Pay me and I will change your state.”
• “I can generate your call-up number.”
• “I can help you get Lagos.”
• “Send money for NYSC relocation.”
• “I know someone at NYSC.”

Be careful. Don’t pay someone simply because they promise to help you change your state of deployment.

14. What About NERD Clearance?

You may have seen messages telling PCMs that they must obtain a NERD clearance slip before they can proceed to camp.

NERD clearance is compulsory for NYSC mobilization.

NYSC now requires that your academic credentials be verified through the NERD platform before you can receive your call-up letter. If you do not have a clearance slip, your mobilization will not go through.

15. What If My Call-Up Number Has Not Appeared?

If you don’t see your call-up number, there is not cause for alarm. Not everyone who registered for the batch or stream will get their call-up numbers at the same time. Some are shifted to the next batch or stream due to logistics reasons.

If you are a foreign-trained graduate, remember that your documents may have to go through evaluation before you are cleared for the issuance of a call-up number.

Also check the official NYSC timetable. Sometimes the problem is not with your registration. The release simply has not started yet.

16. What If My Friends Have Their Call-Up Numbers and I Don’t?

This is normal. Don’t compare your dashboard with your friend’s dashboard and immediately conclude that something is wrong.

As I have explained earlier, not everyone is going to be given call-up numbers at the same time. Different categories of PCMs can go through different processes.

So, if your friend receives a call-up number before you, that does not automatically mean your registration has failed.

17. What If I Am Not Mobilised After Registration?

Completing registration doesn’t mean that every person who submits the form will automatically receive a call-up letter for that particular stream.

Mobilisation depends on the NYSC process, eligibility and the batch timetable.

If you are not posted, it could mean that you have been shifted to the next batch or stream.

NYSC’s mobilisation process involves screening and vetting of submissions, and for foreign-trained graduates, evaluation of credentials before eligible candidates are passed for call-up.

18. What Should I Do While Waiting for My Call-Up Letter?

This is the period where you should prepare instead of worrying.

Use the waiting period to:

Check your dashboard regularly.

Don’t refresh it every five minutes, but check periodically for updates.

Prepare your documents.

Print and photocopy the documents you will need.

Start buying your camp essentials.

You don’t have to wait until the night before travelling.

Save money.

Your transport and personal expenses will come up quickly once your call-up letter is released.

Avoid scams.

Don’t pay random people because you don’t want to be posted to a state that is far or because you are yet to see your call up while others are seeing theirs.

19. What to Do the Day Before Travelling to Camp

When your call-up letter is finally out and your travel date is approaching, do one final check.

Put your documents in a waterproof folder.

Your folder should contain your original documents and photocopies as required.

Keep your money and identification somewhere secure.

Charge your phone and power bank. Save your call-up letter and other important documents digitally as backup.

Confirm your transportation. Confirm the camp location. Tell someone you trust where you are travelling to.

And most importantly, do not forget your call-up letter.
